Install
- Open Settings. Connect to Wi-Fi and keep the QR code from your order at hand — on a computer, a second phone or a printout.
- Choose Cellular. Outside the US this may read Mobile Service or Mobile Data.
- Tap Add eSIM. Your current SIM stays where it is — the eSIM adds a second plan next to it.
- Choose Use QR Code. Transfer From Nearby iPhone is for moving your own number — it is not used here.
- Scan the QR code from your order. Only have this one phone? Take a screenshot of the QR code, open it in Photos, press and hold the code and choose Add eSIM (iOS 17.4 or later).
- Tap Continue. Installing usually takes under a minute. Keep the screen open and stay on Wi-Fi until it finishes.
- Label the plan: Travel. The label tells the eSIM apart from your home SIM in the next steps. Choose Travel and tap Continue.
Settings
- Default line: keep Primary. Calls and texts stay on your home number — the travel eSIM is for internet only.
- Cellular data: choose Travel. Pick Travel and switch off data switching — otherwise the phone can fall back to your home SIM and run up roaming charges.
- Turn on data roaming for the eSIM. Settings → Cellular → Travel → Data Roaming. A travel eSIM only ever works in roaming. Roaming on your Primary line can stay off.
On arrival
- After landing: toggle airplane mode. The internet only starts working in the destination country. Once there, turn airplane mode on, wait 10 seconds and turn it off. The first connection can take up to 15 minutes.
